Curtains for windows are very important in making a room more attractive and it can also give your windows a softer look. Take care of your furniture by placing a curtain in your windows and protecting the furniture from harmful UV. Also see how to make your own cardboard boxes furniture to get your perfect room design. Curtains are also very helpful in controlling the temperature of a room, keeping the wind out and it can even help in reducing exterior noise from coming in or going out.

The arrangement and decorations in your rooms are very important when selecting a curtain since it has to match with all other textiles in your room.

Heat and light insulation curtains:

A net curtain is made of translucent fabric and it allows light to pass thru the curtain, it retains the minimum UV protection for your furniture but allows seeing thru the curtain. These curtains are also called privacy curtains since during the day most of the translucent fabrics allow people inside the room to see outside and prevents outside people from seeing into the room. Due to its nature it does very little to isolate the heat from outside.

Uncoated fabrics are the next in line when protecting your room from heat and light. Most of curtains for your windows are made out of this fabric, a mixture of cotton and polyester. These curtains are reasonably good in protecting from heat but not thick enough to completely block all light from coming in, so some light will still pass thru the fabric.

Coated fabrics are just a standard uncoated fabric but with a layer of rubber on the back of it. This is done to block the most light from passing thru the fabric. Coated fabrics are classified according to the layers of rubber applied to it, so generally:

  • A dim-out or black out curtains are fabrics with just one layer of rubber and it absorbs around 50-70% of a direct light source.
  • Block out curtains have 2 – 3 layers of coated rubber and it can block up to 100% of a direct light source.

The coated fabrics are also called as lined curtains because it does not have any particular color or pattern.

How long should curtains be?

Generally the long curtains set up a more formal, distinguished and elegant mood. Shorter curtains give a more casual, relax and informal mood.

Curtains lenghts and room moods:

  • Shorter curtain lengths add to the mood of any room.
  • Touching the floor in formal or elegant rooms.
  • Extra-long, spreading it’s ends a bit or a lot on the floor is excellent for a romantic room.
  • Ending at the top of floor molding will give the room an awkward look. Just lower the curtain to solve this problem.
  • Reaching the floor is ideal for a living room or a family room.
  • Reaching the bottom of the window trim look great and are practical in a kitchen.

Curtains for ugly windows

Curtains can help hide flaws; here are some ways to make your windows more charming:

  • If your window is to short you can attach the supporting rods just below the ceiling and hang long curtains reaching the floor. It will give the impression that you have a longer and more elegant window.
  • If your window is too long then place a cornice above your curtains with a bold horizontal pattern.

  • If your window is too narrow you can extend your curtain rods wider than the window and place the curtains just touching the corner of your window, it will seem that your window is actually wider that what it really is.
  • If your window is too wide then you can place several curtain panels across the window. You can even place them tied up by pairs or just leave them straight.

Need a quick fix curtain?

If you need to fix your window fast try these ideas for a curtain:

  • Napkin topper: Fold colorful dinner-size napkins in half on the diagonal and drape them, pointed side down, over a fat, stained or painted, wooden pole.
  • Faux balloon: Drape a rectangular tablecloth (folded in half lengthwise) over a fat, decorated pole. Six or more inches from one side of the pole, drape a long folded length of ribbon across the pole with loose ends hanging below the cloth. Gather the ribbon ends and pull them up until the cloth begins to swag, and then tie the ribbon into a bow. Repeat on the opposite side. The result looks like a balloon shade.

  • Lodge-look draperies: Add grommets to one end of a wool plaid blanket. Then run lengths of grosgrain ribbon (long enough to finish in a bow) through the grommets and tie them to a wooden pole or tree branch.
  • Paper café curtains: Fold butcher's paper (which looks like a paper bag) into accordion pleats, punch holes through the pleats (on one end only), and push a curtain rod through, gathering it gracefully as you create a cafécurtain. (You need a length of paper two to three times the width of your window.)
