A Small CNC Milling Machine is a small mill controlled by computer. Very used by designers and amateurs this tool can make your projects come alive in no time. The uses for a CNC machine are endless and I’m sure that you will find it irreplaceable not matter what you do for a living. Just think about it, you literally have a machine that can make most of the parts for other machines with precision. The small milling machine can also be used to make models of your works, engravings, cuttings, moldings, etc. Just think about the money you are going to save and reduction in time that your projects will have

Small CNC Milling Machines and Modelling

A small CNC mill is commonly used to make foam models of 3D objects. From being very practical it can do the work accurately.

The process starts with a 3D modelling program where we make the 3D model. This can be done from simple shapes and using functions like extrusion, bevel to more complex functions like add, subtract shapes from each other. From Technical drawings, for which AutoCAD is very good,by building blocks and shaping them, using Splines and so on. Professionally you can acquire a 3D scanning machine that  uses a laser pointing at your object to scan it. By measuring the difference in time from the laser emission to its reception it then builds an accurate model of your object. These 3D scanning machines tend to be very expensive tough.

When we have our 3D drawing in the computer we need to save the file as .DXF. In regular 3D programs you can find it in the export option or you can get a small program to do the conversion of your program file to .DXF. Having that, you are ready to use MeshCAM, this program will analyze your 3D image and produce the G code.

The MeshCAM program will go thru your 3D image and calculate how to use the tool in the CNC machine to do the actual work. So in this program you will need to introduce which tool you are using, how deep you want that tool to go and so on. Seems complicated but it’s not, it’s quite straight forward.

So after you have you G code you open it with Mach3. Mach3 is responsible to send the control signals to the actual motors in the CNC machine, zero the machine, and so on.

So after making the initial settings in Mach3 you can then press start and see the machine doing all the work for you.

The price for modelling with CNC

The small CNC milling machine has been used to make models of 3D works for a long time. Although artistically the foam is most used, a professional machine can make your model out of plastic, wood or metal.

A small CNC machine can be easily found online and the prices for one of these machines can go from $2500 for wood and plastic only to tens of thousands for professional CNC machines that can cut thru plastic, wood and metal.

The Rockler CNC Shark Routing System, with New 5.5 Software, for a price of $2,600 is one of the cheapest options. Built in plastic this machine can mill soft plastic and soft wood, due to the plastic structure of this machine cutting thru metal is not a good idea. The tension built between the cutting tool and the metal work can rupture the machine structure.

The MicroMill DSLS 3000 for a price of $2995 with Mach3 software, a good option for modeling. This machine can cut thru most materials including metal. The machine limitations of 12’’ by 5.5’’ by 6’’ are very constricting. If you are going to do very small parts then this is the option to go specially because it includes the software which will save you $175.

The CNC Jr Table Top Milling Machine is a good professional CNC machine for the price of $5,423. This is a professional machine that can cut thru most materials, robust and long lasting. This machine is able to produce prototypes, models and even produce final products due to its accuracy and user friendly controls.

As you can see the only problem with these machines is the price, being too high for most pockets the CNC machines are mostly used by professionals or a person that really likes modelling and can afford it.

Cheap CNC machines you can afford

As an alternative to the expensive commercial machines and only if you are doing your parts or models in foam, plastic or wood, the option for a DIY CNC mill becomes available. You will need some lego skills to assemble everything together.

You will need a step-by-step instructions manual with all the parts described and preferably some videos on how to put everything together. One thing that most people forget is that they will need to talk with someone if anything goes wrong. For this I have put some links at the bottom of this page for you to check the websites with step-by-step instructions and also some DIY CNC forums so you can sort any problem you will have on your way.

But how much will I spend?

Well this depends on the project you select:

If you want to make a CNC out of metal pipes for a structure but very easy to build, then it will cost you well under the $200.

If you want a small vertical CNC milling machine that won’t take much space then it will cost you around $200-$300.

If you’re keen of a more good looking desktop router like the one in the picture then the price will be under $500.

The price difference between buying one and doing it yourself is huge but consider the time you will spend to make one and the skills you have, also, keep safety in mind when doing the small CNC milling machine. Don’t forget, these machines are not meant to cut thru blocks of metal!
